About the Highland Terriers breed.
West Highland White Terrier Puppies in Indiana
At Hickory Lane Puppy in Grabill, Indiana, we raise West Highland White Terrier puppies, better known as Westies, in a family setting on our farm. Known for their bright white coats, dark eyes and cheerful personalities, Westies are a beloved family breed.
What Is a Westie?
The West Highland White Terrier was developed in Scotland in the 1800s to hunt small game among the rocks and heather. That heritage gives today's Westie its confidence, curiosity and big-dog attitude in a small, sturdy body.
How Big Do Westies Get?
- Height: about 10–11 inches
- Weight: about 15–20 pounds
- Life expectancy: about 13–15 years
Coat and Grooming
Westies have a double coat: a harsh white outer coat over a soft undercoat. They shed lightly, but the coat needs regular brushing to stay clean and mat-free, and a trim every several weeks keeps the classic Westie look. No dog is completely hypoallergenic.
Temperament
Westies are friendly, intelligent and happy, with a streak of terrier independence that adds to their charm. They are playful companions for children and adults alike and adapt well to a house with a yard or a smaller home, as long as they are part of the family action. True to their hunting roots, many love to chase small animals, so a leash or fenced yard is wise.
Training and Exercise
Early socialization and consistent, positive training help Westies become well-rounded, sociable adults. They are active dogs who enjoy daily walks and playtime, and they thrive on having a job to do and a family to be with.
