Lagotto Romagnolo Puppies in Northern Indiana
At Hickory Lane Puppy in Grabill, Indiana, we raise Lagotto Romagnolo puppies in a family setting on our farm. Known for their curly, low-shedding coats, intelligence and affectionate personalities, Lagottos make wonderful family companions.
What Is a Lagotto Romagnolo?
The Lagotto Romagnolo (pronounced "la-GOAT-oh roh-man-YOH-lo") is an ancient Italian breed from the Romagna region. Originally a water retriever, it became famous as the truffle dog, using its remarkable nose to find truffles. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 2015.
How Big Do Lagottos Get?
- Males: about 17–19 inches tall and 28–35 pounds
- Females: about 16–18 inches tall and 24–31 pounds
- Life expectancy: about 15–17 years
Coat, Shedding and Grooming
The Lagotto's dense, curly coat sheds very little, which makes the breed popular with families who want less dog hair at home, though no dog is completely hypoallergenic. The curls need regular brushing to prevent mats and a trim every couple of months. Common colors include off-white, white with brown or orange markings, brown roan and solid brown.
Temperament
Lagottos are affectionate, loyal and eager to be with their people. They are playful with children, keenly intelligent and wonderfully curious. Their natural digging and searching instincts are best channeled into games, scent work and walks.
Training and Exercise
Smart and eager to learn, Lagottos respond well to positive, consistent training and enjoy mental challenges as much as physical ones. Plan on daily exercise and play; a bored Lagotto will find its own projects.
